Citing the potentail for irreparable harm, the Supreme Court earlier today blocked broadcasting of the Prop 8 trial except to other courtrooms within the same courthouse. The stay is temporary–it expires by its terms on Wednesday, January 13 at 4 p.m. Eastern.
We covered the recent decision out of the Middle District of Georgia prohibiting “broadcasting” a criminal trial over Twitter. This case is different, both because it is a civil trial, and because the enjoined broadcasting is in a visual medium.
Interestingly, the Court’s order prohibits all broadcasting outside of the in-courthouse real-time streaming–including time-delayed broadcasts such as you might see on a nightly news program.
The Court’s order can be found here [PDF]. I think it’s safe to say that you’ll see more coverage of this in the near future.
